THE ORIGIN OF “DIVIDED” NOW CONQUER

“Divided.”   That word evokes an image of an adversarial relationship, so I thought about doing a parody of the Captain America: Civil War poster.  About 2 years ago, the marketing for Zootopia created a bunch of parody posters, and I was thinking that it would be cool to have Nick and Judy facing off against each other.  However, in trying to keep things simple for Inktober, I decided to take a different approach.

Because the word “divided” often has a negative connotation, I wanted to draw something that would be a fun interpretation instead.  Thus, I came up with “Divided” Now Conquer.

PRELIMINARY SKETCHES

What’s fun and is often divided?  Pizza.  To bring that controversial element to “divided,” I put 2 of what I think are the most controversial pizza toppings: pineapple and anchovies.  The shape of the pizza in the 1st sketch as seen above was a bit off, which led to the shape adjustment in the 2nd picture.  Instead of drawing squiggly lines to make the crust, I formed the crust for each slice by using my pencil to shape the crust until I was happy with it.

I then applied this technique to my last preliminary sketch, which is very similar to the final product.

FINAL DRAWING

The last thing that I changed from the preliminary sketches was moving one of the slices away from the pie.  I thought that this would make it look more pizza-like.  Hope you enjoyed today’s Inktober drawing.  Make sure to come back tomorrow for Day 3!

Thanks for reading!
