THE ORIGIN OF THE CASE OF THE “MYSTERIOUS” SONG

“Mysterious.”  I found it amusing that 2 official Inktober prompts this year are lyrics in “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Mulan.  On October 1st, it was “We must be swift as a coursing river.”  Today, exactly 2 weeks later, it’s the line, “Mysterious as the dark side of the moon.”  The lyrics were so ingrained in my head that I was very close to drawing a moon for today’s Inktober drawing.  However, with a word like “mysterious,” I knew that I had to do a drawing inspired by one of my favorite television shows.

PRELIMINARY SKETCHES

Knowing that I wanted to do something Sherlock-themed, it was only a matter of deciding what episode or object that I wanted to portray.  I thought about drawing the pill bottle from “A Study in Pink” or the IOU apple.  Ultimately, I decided on drawing a violin since it’s central to the entire series.  Additionally, I thought that it would be clever to make the drawing a mystery of sorts by giving one measure of notes as a clue.  As you can see from the picture, the drawings barely changed from sketch to sketch.  The only thing that really changed was what notes to include in the clue.

The last thing to edit was the key signature.  I realized that I accidentally left out the key signature when I was checking that I got the notes right.  The key signature is crucial if you want to read the notes as intended.  Leave a comment below with your guess to see if you solved The Case of the Mysterious Song.  Hope you enjoyed today’s Inktober drawing.  Make sure to come back tomorrow for Day 16!
