  • The Origin of “Run”ning Late
  • Preliminary Sketches
  • Final Drawing

“Run.”  In English, there are many phrases and idioms that use the word, “Run.”  For instance, you say that you’re going to give someone a run for their money if you’re confident that you’ll be able to beat him or her.  As you’ll see in the next section, I went through several interpretations of today’s prompt until settling on the final product.

“Run don’t walk.”  I’ve seen this phrase online to refer to something that one should go rush to see or do.  For me, that means running like mad to the ice cream truck.  Although I liked the concept, I wasn’t happy with the look of the truck.

“Running out of ideas.”  I thought about having a figure run out of the word “ideas,” but I couldn’t visualize how that figure would run through the letters.  The situation was ironic because I had been running out of ideas by this point.

“Running out of time.”  The top two drawings (the alarm clock and the hourglass) were inspired by the idea of running out of time.  Since I was getting desperate to complete the 11th day of Inktober, I also briefly entertained the idea of a running tree (i.e., Run Forest Run-notice the spelling of forest).  Also, not pictured is my “home run” concept, which involved a baseball bat.

Eventually, after a long brainstorming session, I settled on the concept of time.  I included an arm stretching out for the snooze button at 9:00 A.M.  I figured that if it’s 9 ‘o clock and you’re hitting snooze, you’re running late.  Hope you enjoyed today’s Inktober drawing.  Make sure to come back tomorrow for Day 12!
